CHURCH HISTORY

Francis Makemie arrived from Ireland to minister to Presbyterians on the Delmarva Peninsula, organizing them into congregations.  In 1706, Makemie became the first moderator of the General Presbytery of America at Philadelphia.  The Wicomico Presbyterian Church has been a continuous congregation since 1683.  Wicomico Church was one of the original congregations in this organization.

The present brick church was erected in 1859.  Since then, numerous changes have taken place.  The main sanctuary was expanded and renovated, and a new annex was built for the Church School.  Installation of the stained glass memorial windows was accomplished in 1911.  A new pipe organ replaced the old one in 1983.  In the 1990's a modernization program updated the lighting, added air conditioning to the building, and renovated the pews and floors in the sanctuary.  Outside improvements included landscaping, lighting, and a brick patio and sidewalk.

Currently, an active congregation of 250 members, the church offers an excellent Music Ministry, Youth Ministry, Church School for all ages, women's and men's groups, Bible study on Wednesday evening, two worship services on Sunday morning, and a caring community of love and support to all who enter.
